For LIONESS fans, it would be the kind of news almost nobody wanted to hear.
After three seasons at the center of Taylor Sheridan’s intense espionage drama, Zoe Saldaña’s Joe McNamara has become virtually inseparable from the identity of the series.
But what would happen if its biggest star suddenly had to step away?
In our fictional scenario, production plans for a potential fourth season are thrown into uncertainty after Saldaña suffers an injury while preparing for the physically demanding role.
At first, the situation is believed to be temporary.
Production could simply wait.
But then comes the development that would change everything: doctors advise Saldaña to avoid the demanding action work required to play Joe for several months, forcing producers to reconsider the entire direction of Season 4.
That would create an enormous problem.
Joe isn’t merely another member of the Lioness team.
She is its emotional center.
Season 3 pushed the character further than ever, with Joe becoming the target herself after being abducted and brutally tortured. She eventually survived, but the ordeal left both physical and psychological scars.
The finale then created an even bigger crisis.
Joe returned home to discover that her commitment to the mission had inflicted a devastating cost on her family, while the revelation surrounding Aaliyah left another major threat unresolved.
In other words, Season 4 would seemingly need Joe.
So how could LIONESS continue without Saldaña performing at full capacity?

In our fictional scenario, Taylor Sheridan initially rejects the idea of replacing Joe.
Instead, writers begin discussing something much more interesting.
Joe wouldn’t disappear.
She would change.
Rather than immediately returning to dangerous field operations, Joe would be forced into a command position, directing missions while recovering and confronting something she has spent years avoiding: what remains of her life when she can no longer be the person kicking down the door.
That decision could also create a much larger role for Cruz Manuelos.
Cruz has steadily evolved from a recruit operating under Joe’s command into one of the team’s most important operatives.
And then comes the biggest twist.
In our imagined version of Season 4, Joe eventually calls Cruz into her office.
There is no lengthy speech.
No dramatic ceremony.
Joe simply places a classified mission file on the desk.
Cruz looks at it, then back at her.
“Why are you giving this to me?”
Joe pauses.

“Because this time, you’re the Lioness.”
That single moment would completely redefine the series.
Joe McNamara would remain part of LIONESS, allowing Saldaña to continue in a less physically demanding capacity while Cruz becomes the operative carrying the action-heavy storyline.
And strangely enough, reality already gives that fictional possibility some narrative weight.
Saldaña recently described LIONESS as an extraordinarily demanding creative commitment and said she currently has no desire to add another Taylor Sheridan series to her workload. She has not, however, announced that she is leaving Joe behind.
More importantly, there is still no Season 4 production for her to officially leave.
Paramount+ says LIONESS has not yet received an official fourth-season renewal.
So the real cliffhanger isn’t an injury.
It is whether Paramount+ orders another mission at all.
And if it does, Season 3 has already created a fascinating question for the writers:
Will Joe continue leading the Lionesses from the battlefield — or is it finally time for Cruz to become the woman standing at the front of the war?
