BREAKING : Joey Graziadei Reveals His Toughest Struggle So Far—Fans Fear His ‘DWTS’ Journey Could Be Over???
Bachelor viewers were mesmerized by Joey Graziadei’s eyes, but not for the reason you think. He reveals how his liver condition affects DWTS. Keep reading to find out more.
Joey Graziadei Reveals Reason For Yellow Eyes
The Bachelor cameras got up close and personal with Joey Graziadei. Many fans quickly noticed a strange yellow hue surrounding his eyes. After social media speculation reached a fever pitch, Joey shared the real reason for his yellow eyes.
He revealed that he was diagnosed with Gilbert Syndrome in high school.
What is Gilbert Syndrome?
Gilbert syndrome is a harmless, inherited condition that affects how the liver processes bilirubin, a pigment in bile. It causes periods of high bilirubin levels in the blood, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
The condition is mild, does not damage the liver long-term, and does not shorten life expectancy. It usually doesn’t require medical treatment. Some people may have additional symptoms during jaundice episodes, like abdominal pain, fatigue, and loss of appetite.
Managing the condition involves eating a healthy diet, staying hydrated, avoiding fatty or sugary foods and alcohol, and not eating foods that cause intolerance.
How His Liver Condition Affects DWTS
Gilbert Syndrome isn’t life-threatening, but it can have some odd side effects. Joey’s Dancing With The Stars partner, Jenna Johnson, revealed one she’s noticed. According to her, Joey Graziadei rarely uses the bathroom during the practice sessions, no matter how much water he drinks.
“I don’t really drink water, so it’s always shocking to me. I’m like, ‘Wow, he can drink a lot and if I drink a sip of water, I got to pee immediately. And he doesn’t really have to pee that well.”
Joey revealed that he drinks “four to five” bottles of water during practices. “If my liver needs it, it’s just soaking it all up,” he joked. He told PEOPLE magazine in March of 2024 how he manages the condition.
“I have to pay attention to drinking more fluids. It is worse when I have stress or lack of sleep, which happens on a TV show.”
Between rumors of relationship issues with Kelsey Anderson and learning detailed dances, it’s no wonder Joey Graziadei is under stress. The former Bachelor star is an early favorite to win Season 33 of the ABC celebrity dance competition. If he does, he will be the first male Bachelor Nation star to win. Former Bachelorettes Kaitlyn Bristowe and Hannah Brown both took home the Mirrorball Trophy.
