Why Captain Sandy Refuses to Fire Iain MacLean on Below Deck Med

a montage of Captain Sandy and Iain

Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 has been an onslaught of poor performances, especially from Iain MacLean, but why hasn’t Captain Sandy Yawn fired the Bosun for his mistakes yet? Captain Sandy, who has long been a firm believer in second chances, has been spending her time aboard Mustique dealing with major crew issues. While Iain has been a difficult Bosun, Captain Sandy has also dealt with issues with Mustique’s Chef, Johnathan Shillingford, and other crew members aboard the superyacht throughout the charter season. While her philosophy has always been to give second chances, Captain Sandy may be prolonging the inevitable.

Throughout Below Deck Mediterranean season 9, Captain Sandy has had to be diligent in the way she disciplines her crew, especially knowing that she wants her team leads to take charge. The majority of the Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 crew has been able to work within their job functions, but with Iain struggling so hard to complete his tasks as a Bosun, he’s had a hard time working with the rest of the exterior team to make the transition from charter to charter smooth. Despite Captain Sandy wanting to give Iain a chance, it’s strange she hasn’t fired him.

Captain Sandy Has Had Problems With Iain All Season

He’s Not Working Up To Her Standards

Although Captain Sandy has been working with the crew all season, she’s had problems with Iain from the beginning. The Bosun, who came into Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 with five years in the yachting industry, felt confident in the way he’d been navigating the charter season, even though Captain Sandy has had criticism of him more often than not. The Captain, who has been doing her best to ensure that the charter season is running smoothly, has asked Iain to improve his communication and understand his leadership role all season long. Instead, Iain has seemed to get worse.

Iain Hasn’t Improved His Performance At All

He Doesn’t Think He Needs To Change

Although Iain has received negative feedback from Captain Sandy and the rest of the exterior team throughout his time aboard Mustique, he hasn’t managed to change anything about his performance as Bosun. Instead, Iain has actively gotten worse as a Bosun throughout the charter season, seemingly ignoring the criticism he’s received. Iain’s performance has caused a few dangerous situations, both for the superyacht and individual guests, as he hasn’t used his judgment well throughout the season thus far. Even though Captain Sandy has warned him, it appears Iain doesn’t believe he needs to change his ways or decisions at all.

Why Won’t Captain Sandy Fire Iain?

She’s Too Forgiving

With Captain Sandy big on giving her crew members chances to improve after making mistakes, it’s clear that she’s been doing her best to allow Iain some room to grow despite knowing that he’s had issues. Even with her several chances, though, Iain has been struggling to maintain his position and successfully help bridge the gap between the Captain and the exterior team. Having made dangerous mistakes, Captain Sandy needs to take action by firing Iain. Though the Captain values her forgiving nature, the Below Deck Mediterranean Captain owes it to the rest of her crew to keep them safe.
