Will Elsbeth Bring Back Familiar Faces from The Good Wife?
Also, Channel 5 explains how Britain saved the Olympics in 1948 and there’s another murder in Midsomer
Pick of the day: Elsbeth
9pm, Sky Witness
“I don’t think anyone is expecting me…” claims Carrie Preston’s unconventional attorney Elsbeth. She utilises her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner devious crims, such as Stephen Moyer’s slimy playwright (“I love playing chess against a good adversary”), alongside the NYPD. After leaving her legal career in Chicago to tackle a new investigative role in New York City, Elsbeth finds herself jockeying with the NYPD Captain CW Wagner (Wendell Pierce). Working alongside Elsbeth is Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), who quickly develops an appreciation for Elsbeth’s insightful and offbeat ways.
Midsomer Murders
8pm, ITV1
Yet more slaughter in the shires, this time centred around an organic bakery. The newly restored Larkton’s Mill is causing resentment in Lower Blissingham, with many of the village businesses struggling, traffic increased and rumours of expansion. The complaints are not taken seriously until several people are dosed with a dangerous hallucinogenic, with Barnaby and Winter (Neil Dudgeon and Nick Hendrix) called in to investigate.
Ghosts US
8.30pm, BBC Three
Alberta hits it off with a poltergeist who is attached to a newly arrived guest while Isaac and Nigel have separate bachelor parties. This has neither the wit nor pathos of the UK version but it has the very occasional decent gag: “Are we in Nebraska ’cos that was corny.”
London ’48: How Britain Saved the Olympics
9pm, Channel 5
A fascinating look at how the 1948 Olympic Games came into being, as the world struggled to cope in the aftermath of the Second World War, and the Games were held for the first time in 12 years. With Britain suffering from widespread poverty and rationing, hosting the event seemed a tad unlikely, but existing venues were renovated despite a low budget and little time, and the British people pulled together to make the Games a success.
The Body Detectives
9pm, Channel 4
This poignant doc charts the work of an organisation dedicated to revisiting forgotten cases, giving a name and a story to each unidentified person and giving the families the solace they seek. Ex-detective Dave Grimstead and his team investigate the disappearance of George Johnston – who vanished off the Norfolk coast in 1984 while on a family holiday. George selflessly entered the sea to help a family in distress, but tragically was never seen again. Now, George’s family seek Dave’s help to try to find his final resting place.
Paddy and Molly: Show No Mersey
11.40pm and 12.10am, BBC One
“My career is on a tipping point,” explains MMA fighter “Meatball” Molly McCann, who has the biggest fight of her life in two weeks. Meanwhile, Molly’s best mate and fellow MMA fighter Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett is “gutted” about his long-term shoulder injury and manager Jurgen Klopp quitting Liverpool (“I feel like a family member has died because Klopp said he’s leaving”). More seriously, we see Paddy with his therapist discussing his struggle with his last surgery, the suicide of a good pal and loneliness. A charming look at these two engaging British fighters making a massive impact in UFC.
