Chef Dave White replaces chef Johnathan at Below Deck Med

Below Deck Med’s Johnathan Shillingford Chef Johnathan Shillingford looks unsure, with Chef Dave staring forward and Chef Ben smiling.

Below Deck Mediterranean has had a serious chef issue throughout the season, which is why I think Chef Dave White should replace the current chef, Johnathan Shillingford, as soon as possible. While Chef Dave has only been a part of Captain Sandy Yawn’s crew for one season of Below Deck Med, he made quite an impression. Throughout Below Deck Mediterranean season 9, Chef Jono has been struggling to create meals that have satisfied the charter guests. By not meeting Captain Sandy’s standards, he’s made it clear that he may not be the best fit for Below Deck Mediterranean season 9.

While Johnathan has an interesting perspective on being a superyacht chef coming into Below Deck Mediterranean’s galley, the Chef has proven that his skills don’t necessarily line up with the way he’s talked about his experience. Captain Sandy quickly understood that even if Chef Jono did improve, she needed a contingency plan in place in case she needed to fire him and move along with the charter season quickly. Though it hasn’t been revealed which chef Captain Sandy has been keeping on the back burner, I believe she has Chef Dave waiting in the wings to replace her current chef.

Chef Dave Is Captain Sandy’s Favorite Chef

While Below Deck Mediterranean has had several chefs through the years who have impressed Captain Sandy, none has done better for her during a charter season than Chef Dave. Having worked for Captain Sandy during Below Deck Mediterranean season 7, Chef Dave was great at anticipating the needs of the charter guests and being able to create dishes that would impress both them and the Captain. Though Chef Dave and the rest of the Below Deck Med season 7 cast received mixed reviews from viewers, Captain Sandy still feels strongly that he’s the best superyacht chef she’s ever worked with.

During Chef Dave’s time on Below Deck Mediterranean, his cooking was typically outshined by the interpersonal issues he was having with Natasha “Tash” Webb. Captain Sandy wasn’t necessarily privy to his relationship with Natasha, which was troubling for both the Chef and the Chief Stew. Though Natasha was already involved in a romantic relationship outside of the superyacht crew, she played with Chef Dave’s mind and made it seem like there was something brewing between the two of them. Though the connection was difficult to navigate, the chef didn’t allow his drama to interfere with his performance in the galley.

Chef Johnathan’s Doing Better But His Food Is Still Mediocre

While Chef Dave is one of Captain Sandy’s favorite crew members she’s worked with, she still hasn’t fired Chef Jono to bring her former chef aboard Mustique. Chef Johnathan has been struggling throughout the charter season, creating meals that are mediocre at best. During the first charter of the season, he was given a pass on the meals he was making as the provisioner didn’t provide the proper groceries for him to make what the guests had asked for. Though his performance was decent under duress, he continued to struggle heavily during the second charter of the season, as well.

Chef Johnathan knew that he had to bring his cooking up to par if he was going to keep his job aboard Mustique, especially after Captain Sandy joined guests for dinner and found the meal she was having to be just decent. Though he was able to get things together for the third charter, Jono has still been serving food that isn’t the best, but isn’t the worst. He’s not impressing his guests with the meals aboard Mustique, which is what Captain Sandy is looking for. I believe his food has been mediocre, which isn’t what’s expected on a superyacht.

Chef Johnathan Doesn’t Have The Passion For Food Like Chef Dave Did

While Chef Johnathan has been working to improve his performance on the Mustique, his passion for cooking isn’t there in the same way Chef Dave’s was. Jono appears to be one of the more passive chefs that Below Deck Mediterranean has seen in recent years, having created some decent meals, but sharing that cooking wasn’t his original passion in life, and wasn’t necessarily what he saw himself doing when he was younger. Though Jono has made a career of being a chef, it’s clear that his heart isn’t in it the same way Chef Dave’s was.

As Jono has struggled with having a passion for creating delicious, beautiful dishes that wow charter guests, his time as the chef aboard Mustique should come to an end soon. I believe that Chef Dave, who had some issues with the way he conducted himself personally aboard Mustique but ultimately was able to succeed in his service, should take Chef Jono’s spot. His passion for cooking was able to shine through in the way he served his guests, and Below Deck Mediterranean was better for it.
