Fraser from Below Deck faces criticism for his “inappropriate” Season 11 romance

Steven and Fraser

Below Deck’s eleventh season continues to serve up drama, but this time, it’s not the usual crewmate squabbles or demanding guests. Chief Steward Fraser Olender has found himself in hot water after a surprising turn of events in episode 14.

Fraser, known for his meticulousness and dry wit, sparked controversy with an unexpected connection that went beyond the typical crew-guest dynamic. The object of his affection? A charter guest named Steven, affectionately nicknamed “husband” by Fraser throughout the episode. Their bond seemed to blossom quickly, filled with playful banter and an undeniable chemistry. The culmination of this connection came as a shock to viewers – a kiss exchanged between Fraser and Steven.

While some viewers found the kiss lighthearted and a harmless display of newfound friendship, social media erupted with criticism. Many labeled the encounter as “inappropriate” given Fraser’s marital status. As a married man with children, viewers questioned his judgment and professionalism. The potential for blurring lines between crew and guests is a major concern on Below Deck. Maintaining clear boundaries is crucial for ensuring a safe and smooth operation.

Adding fuel to the fire, Fraser reportedly secured permission from Captain Sandy for the kiss, initially requesting approval for a “peck” to avoid any accusations of sexual assault. This premeditation further fueled the controversy. Critics argued that seeking permission for such an act only highlighted its inappropriateness within the professional setting.

The incident raises several important questions. Did Fraser prioritize his personal feelings over his professional obligations? Was the kiss a genuine expression of affection, or a lapse in judgment fueled by the high-pressure environment and the allure of a vacation fling?

This situation also highlights the ethical considerations of reality TV. While entertainment is paramount, does the show have a responsibility to ensure crew members maintain professional boundaries? Should producers intervene in situations that could potentially jeopardize the safety or well-being of crew or guests?

The fallout from Fraser’s actions remains to be seen. Will his relationship with his captain be strained? Will this incident affect his future with Below Deck? Only time will tell. However, one thing is certain – Fraser’s “inappropriate” romance has become a major talking point, proving that Below Deck can still surprise audiences, even after eleven seasons.

After numerous jokes suggesting Steven would propose at midnight, Barbie brought up the idea that a “New Year’s kiss” would be in order — and Fraser was all on board.

Double-checking with Captain Kerry about the potential of a guest-crew member kiss, Fraser was given the all-clear to go ahead after clarifying the “peck” would be consensual and not fall under sexual assault as the Captain first presumed.

Having been granted permission, it didn’t take long before the two shared a cheeky peck as midnight rolled over. Leaving Fraser with butterflies and openly admitting to wanting more.

When the crew goes out to celebrate after their charter concludes, it’s revealed Fraser has been texting Steven.

Steven wants to see Fraser before his departure the following day, so the Chief Stew invites his charter crush out clubbing after some encouragement from his fellow crewmates. The two hit it off, with plenty of passionate kisses and talk of being “obsessed” with one another.

However, not all viewers were impressed by the boatmance. In a Reddit post discussing episode 14, one user claimed Fraser’s actions were “inappropriate.”

“Why is Frasier celebrated for doing this when Hannah was shamed for texting a guest?” they asked, referencing when Hannah Ferrier was slammed for texting charter guest Jason Ziegler during a previous season of Below Deck Mediterranean.

Another user agreed, writing “Bingo.” Meanwhile, a third theorized the situation was different as Fraser had first asked for permission from Captain Kerry before making his move.

For now, it remains unclear whether the two men’s relationship will continue to develop, though Fraser has already made an appearance on Steven’s Instagram.
